Thrift shop awards two scholarships

By Erin Walkey | | June 27, 2013

Each year the Staff Noncommissioned Officers’ Wives Thrift Shop awards scholarships to students who show initiative in continuing their education.
Two scholarships were awarded June 19 to students of military families based on academic standing and a 500- - 700-word essay. The Thrift Shop has been awarding scholarships for more than 20 years and plans to continue the annual award.
The two recipients, Brianna Scott and Danielle Ward, each received a $750 scholarship.
The scholarship winners both graduated from Lee County High School and plan to attend college in the state of Georgia.
Ward expressed her gratitude of receiving a scholarship that was awarded from the Thrift Shop.
“I really appreciate this scholarship and it has helped me and my family out so much,” she said.
Ward will attend Valdosta State University where she will major in biology to become a genetic counselor.
Scott thanked the Thrift Shop for supporting her dreams and helping them to become a reality. She will attend Georgia Southwestern State University where she plans to major in pre-medicine to become an anesthesiologist.
“With college tuition rates constantly rising, every little bit helps,” Susan Mardon, Thrift Shop worker, said. “I hope this scholarship brings the winners a sense of accomplishment and encourages them to go for their dreams.”
