Kevin Hannes, federal coordinating officer, Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Incident Management Assistance Team - West, spoke at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Jan. 31.
He was joined by a group that included the individual assistance and hazard mitigation coordinators from FEMA and a representative from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The group met with base personnel affiliated with the installation and their family members at the Base Theater to answer questions and assist with registration for disaster assistance.
"We are here to help anyone who received damage from either tornado that impacted Dougherty County on January 2nd or 22nd,” Hannes said. “We are here to answer your questions and give you the facts about what you need to hear, not just want to hear."
Col. James C. Carroll III, commanding officer, MCLB Albany, said FEMA’s support is another example of the strong partnership that exist between the local and federal level.
“I really appreciate them taking the time to speak to the workforce about help that is readily available after the recent tornadoes that hit our community,” he said.
Anyone who has received damage from either storm/tornado needs to register for disaster assistance at one of the disaster recovery locations in Albany; visit the website www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA.
According to FEMA officials, registration is required to receive assistance in the form of FEMA grants or SBA loans. For those who may not qualify for FEMA grants, you may apply for a low interest SBA loan at www.sba.gov or by calling 1-800-659-2955.
Hannes reminded those in attendance that it's okay to seek counseling and ask for help, if needed.
"Albany is a resilient community,” he said. “Your lives may have been impacted, but it is not over. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your families. My team and I are here to help you get started and bring in needed resources.”
