National Influenza Vaccination Week: It’s not too late to vaccinate

11 Dec 2014 | Yan Kennon Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany

Naval Branch Health Clinic Albany recognizes this week as National Influenza Vaccination Week, highlighting the importance of continuing influenza (flu) vaccinations through the holiday season and beyond.

The flu vaccine is recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for everyone 6 months and older, and is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu. It’s a requirement for active-duty military personnel, selected reserves and health care workers.

NBHC Albany continues to provide the annual flu vaccine to its patients — service members, retirees and their families. The Immunizations Clinic is open for walk-ins Mondays – Fridays from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Some people are at greater risk for serious complications from the flu such as pregnant women; adults, age 65 and older; children under age 5; and those with a chronic medical condition like asthma, diabetes or heart disease. Some flu symptoms include fever, cough, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Some may also have vomiting and diarrhea.

Two kinds of flu vaccine are available. Flu mist — an intranasal vaccine that is squirted into the nose — is for healthy patients, ages 2-49. The injectable vaccine (flu shot) is for people, 50 and older; pregnant women (protecting mom during pregnancy and baby for up to 6 months after birth), and anyone with a chronic medical condition such as asthma, diabetes or emphysema.
