Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany leadership hosted a Women’s Equality Day luncheon to celebrate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, August 30. The anniversary of that adoption is officially observed on August 26.

Organizer Charlene Surrency, supply system analyst, Marine Corps Logistics Command, displayed several posters dating back to 2003 showing off the eras in which the Department of Defense has supported the national holiday.

“Each year, there’s something growing, it changes,” Surrency explained. “It’s an alert to help others learn about how we should equate ourselves to others.”

While sharing her personal career journey, the guest speaker and general counsel for MCLB Albany and LOGCOM, Tracy Madsen, said she’s witnessed an ongoing effort to improve the equality for women in the Marine Corps.

“At headquarters Marine Corps, I’ve been in meetings with the commandant of the Marine Corps where I’ve seen an institutional commitment to making sure females, Marines and civilians are treated just the same,” Madsen added. “Everybody is considered a valuable part of the team. I’m really proud of that,” Madsen added.”
