Sgt. Maj. Chad M. Coston is a second-generation Marine. He was raised in Louisiana and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1994 with the expectation of getting out after his first four years were done. Now he is the sergeant major of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, making him the senior enlisted advisor to Col. Michael Fitzgerald, commanding officer, MCLB Albany. Officials at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany celebrated a milestone more than a decade in the making on May 24 when they publicly announced that the installation recently became the first in the Department of Defense to accomplish Net Zero for energy. Among those at the ceremony to mark the achievement was Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment Meredith Berger and MCLB Albany Commanding Officer Col. Michael Fitzgerald. The event also included employee recognition, a press conference, a tour of the base's energy facilities and an announcement of the Department of the Navy's Climate Action 2030. The U.S. Marine Corps placed an order last year for 21 mobile solar-powered electric vehicle charging systems. Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany was among those to benefit, receiving one unit. The Beam Global EV charging systems were purchased through the General Services Administration. Marine Corps Installations Command requires a turnkey charging infrastructure solution to solve near-term charging requirements without having to wait for construction and electrical projects to be completed. Tara Ballard , the daughter of two retired Marines, recently departed from her position as the logistics chief for Combat Logistics Regiment 4, Combat Logistics Battalion 453, Detachment 2 Supply Company at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany. She is now the assistant Marine officer instructor at The Citadel, one of very few women selected to serve in the AMOI role and the first female drill instructor to do it at The Citadel. - Gunnery Sgt. Dickinson Jr. received the 2021 Department of Defense Safety and Occupational Health System Achievement Award recently for his outstanding service and accomplishments as the installation safety manager at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany. Several buildings on the base benefit from its ground source heat pump systems that reduce electric consumption in those buildings by 50 percent and eliminates a water-cooling requirement.
