The National Fire Protection Association, the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 95 years, has announced “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, 2020. NFPA’s focus on cooking fire safety comes in response to home cooking fires representing the leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half or 49-percent of all home fires involving cooking equipment; unattended cooking is the leading cause of these fires. While crews work on needed improvements, so does the MCX’s mission of serving its patrons. Officials at the base said these renovations provide an opportunity to bring the store up-to-date. Located adjacent to the bachelor enlisted quarters at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is a site where an electrical polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB, transformer once stood. The Staff Non-Commissioned Officers Wives Thrift Shop benefited Marines stationed at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany as well as their families. It has shared in the stories of the Marines who have walked in and out of its doors, provided goods, handed out academic scholarships and built relationships with organizations in the Albany community.The store has now closed its doors. Its legacy will live on through another nonprofit, Albany Rescue Mission.
