Motorists entering and exiting Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany from Fleming Road can expect major changes in traffic patterns and potential delays for the next month.

Workers are installing barriers, which will strengthen the security of the Main Gate, according to Hubert Smigelski, deputy director, Installation and Environment Division, MCLB Albany.

“The barriers are being installed to better protect those who visit, work and live aboard the installation,” Smigelski said. “The project is planned to be completed by April 23 and everyone is asked to pay extra attention when travelling in this area.”

The construction will affect both inbound and outbound traffic, the traffic circle and connecting avenues, according to Sean Lamonzs, deputy police chief, Marine Corps Police Department, Public Safety Division, MCLB Albany.

“We are beginning with the inbound lanes first followed by the outbound lanes,” Lamonzs said.

“Everyone is urged to pay attention to police officers, traffic cones, barriers and signs, which will assist drivers in arriving safely to their destinations.

“As the workforce approaches the installation, there will be two points of entry,” he noted. “The two lanes will filter into the same lane as drivers work around the traffic circle. Drivers have the option to continue down West Matthews into the industrial area or take Slack Street.”
Safety is paramount and everyone is encouraged to approach with caution and be mindful of the police officers, who will be wearing vests, assisting in the traffic flow, Lamonzs added.

He also said signs are being added to help travelers find certain facilities and lighting to assist with early morning and evening traffic.

Aside from the Main Gate, drivers have the option to use the Johnson Road Gate, for inbound and outbound use, and the Commercial Vehicle gate for outbound traffic only. The hours of operation for both gates have not changed.
