The Centers for Disease Control website provides information on breast cancer and specific genes, which increases risk for breast and ovarian cancer. According the CDC website, everyone has BRCA genes, which are breast cancer susceptibility genes; some people have mutations in these genes, which elevate the potential for not only breast cancer, but also ovarian and other cancers. Knowing family history may help with early detection.
