The Centers for Disease Control website illustrates a direct correlation between breast cancer and a mutation of specific genes, which it refers to as BRCA genes. The acronym BRCA stands for breast cancer susceptibility genes. According to the CDC, there are two BRCA genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2; mutations (changes) in BRCA genes increase risk of breast, ovarian and other cancers.
