Smith urged corporals to exclude the ‘deadly vowels:’ (A-E-I-O-U), when setting their foundation as leaders: 'A' is arrogance; 'E' is ego; 'I' is individual; ‘O' is the one, and 'U' is unapproachable. The training was conducted as part of the noncommissioned officers’ Professional Military Education on leadership.
