U.S. Marine Corps photo by Pamela Jackson/Released 150524-M-ZZ999-361.JPG
May 26, 2015
Members of the Albany, Ga., community conduct a Field of Crosses Memorial Day ceremony in front of the Albany Mall, May 24. After giving a brief history of Memorial Day, Sgt. Maj. Joseph Davenport, sergeant major, Marine Corps Logistics Command, told those gathered that Memorial Day is the ultimate American holiday often confused with Veterans Day. "It is a day often used by retail establishments as a sales day; by sports fans for races such as the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 and so on. But if you ask a veteran or a family member, they will tell you it represents something else. John 15:15 says, ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’ So tomorrow at 3 p.m., please pause for a national moment of remembrance to honor that fallen warrior for his or her sacrifice," he said.
