The renovated checkpoint, which was officially opened Nov. 16, was implemented as part of base safety personnel’s strategic plan to alleviate early morning traffic congestion created by commercial vehicles at the Fleming Road Gate 5.

Safety personnel at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany implemented the official opening of the Mock Road Gate — rerouting commercial vehicle traffic from the Fleming Road Gate to the newly-constructed entrance, Nov. 16.

One purpose of the construction project, which got underway several months ago, was to reduce the big rigs and vendor vehicles merging into the already congested early-morning traffic on Fleming Road.

Another advantage of the move is to create a safer environment for the processing and inspection of commercial vehicles as well as increasing the capacity of the waiting area for in-bound vehicle traffic, according to safety officials.

William McNulty, director, Public Safety Division, MCLB Albany, commented on the strategies and benefits of moving the commercial vehicle traffic from Fleming Road to Mock Road.

“Mock Road consists of four lanes — two lanes each way — and it has a turn lane in the middle, plus it also has a turn lane at the Wilkinson Road gate,” he said. “We’re going from two lanes to possibly six available lanes (to facilitate truck traffic).

“For us, that’s a no-lose situation,” McNulty explained. “We’ll be able to process trucks in and out; we can inspect four tractor trailers at one time out there. We've got a lot more room to get them in and get them out safely.”

Due to the recent changes in the installation’s gate operations at MCLB Albany, Marine Corps Police Department personnel has issued the following notifications for privately-owned as well as commercial vehicles access:

·         Johnson Road (Gate 25) is now open for POV traffic, Mondays – Fridays from 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

·         Mock Road (Gate 15) is open for commercial vehicles only, Mondays – Fridays from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

·         Fleming Road (Gate 5) will open for outbound traffic only, Mondays – Fridays from 4-6 p.m.
