A memorandum of understanding was entered into by the Lee County School System and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, recently. The agreement allows children of active-duty parents residing aboard the base to attend a Lee County school tuition-free.

The agreement took effect this calendar school year.

After more than two years of negotiation, Col. James C. Carroll III, commanding officer, MCLB Albany, and Dr. Jason Miller, superintendent, Lee County Board of Education, were able to come to an agreement, according to Lt. Col. Nathaniel Robinson, executive officer, MCLB Albany.

“This is another example of the positive relationship we want to continue to foster with the community,” Robinson said.

Miller also spoke of his commitment to offer support to the base and the servicemen and women stationed here.

"The Lee County Board of Education and Lee County Schools have an excellent relationship with MCLB Albany,” Miller said. “We appreciate all the active-duty personnel stationed in Albany and want to support them as they serve our nation."

That support is definitely noticed by military parents, according to Latreesa Perryman, school liaison officer, MCLB Albany.  She revealed this initiative saves families approximately $1,600 per year per child for tuition cost.

“I have a family with two school-aged children (who) recently moved onto the base from Lee County,” she said. “Because the parents want to enroll their children in the Lee County school system, they will save roughly $3,200 per year.”

Perryman said for families that savings is substantial.
