Bluebird population aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is on the rise due to efforts of volunteers and Natural Resources, Installation and Environment Division.

Recently, 17 volunteers from the Volunteer and Career Development Program assisted Natural Resources with installing about 100 replacement bluebird boxes and cleaning out existing boxes along Perimeter Road throughout the installation.

Natural Resources Manager Julie Robbins examined 20 bluebird nesting boxes in a survey April 13 and found four active nests. During her observation, she saw seven bluebird eggs and two 2-day-old hatchlings.

“Usually, the young bluebirds will stay in the nesting box for about three weeks before leaving the nest,” Robbins said. “The bluebirds typically nest in Georgia from late March through August and will often raise two broods during that time.”
