07/25/2013 -- Marines, family members and personnel aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany may experience an increase in railcar traffic during the next several weeks due to retrograde and reset equipment being transported by train.
Joining forces with other U.S. military branches of service, MCLB Albany is one of several installations scheduled to take part in reducing the Marine Corps’ presence in Afghanistan.
“(The) United States Marine Corps is excessing a fair amount of rolling stock to us at Albany (and) vehicles are being loaded onto (railcars) using large heavy-duty fork lifts, which we are then moving out to military ranges, (mostly air to ground), by train to serve as hard targets,” Kenneth R. MacNevin, chief of Public Affairs, Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services and Defense Logistics Agency Logistics Information Service, Battle Creek, Mich., said.
Cargo will vary based on the mission and there could be as many as 50 or as few as 30 railcars, according to Bart Rigg, director, Logistics Support Division, MCLB Albany.
Rigg said base personnel will receive an “MCLB All Hands” notification message announcing anticipated traffic congestion throughout the next few weeks.
