MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE ALBANY -- Twenty-four students from Monroe Comprehensive High School, Albany, Ga., were given the opportunity to shadow various occupations at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Nov. 29.
The students were assigned to 11 different offices throughout the base to learn about a variety of jobs ranging from criminal investigations to the medical field.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charles Goodson, officer-in-charge, Naval Branch Health Clinic, hosted the largest number of students and said as military members, one of the most important ways we can give back is to also be teachers.
“This was a great opportunity for us to share our crafts and various medical career opportunities within Navy medicine with the students and it was also a chance for them to ask questions of us,” he said. “We look forward to hosting them each year. This experience helps the students figure out if this is something they do not want to do or it can help solidify that it is.”
Linda Jackson, work-based learning and job shadowing coordinator, Monroe Comprehensive High School, said her students had nothing but positive comments about their visit here.
“This is our third year of job shadowing at the Marine base and it is the only place we go because of the variety of jobs offered here,” she said. “The mentors are very motivating and really take pride in their careers and are eager to share those experiences with our students.”
One of the students who shadowed at the clinic, Charmane Wilson, said it gave her an opportunity to meet people who are doing and have done what she wants to do when she grows up.
“I came here today wanting to be a registered nurse after high school, but also learned that I have an interest in dentistry,” she said.
Another student, A’Bria McDonald, had the opportunity to shadow the Public Affairs Office staff and observed how events like job shadowing and dealing with the media were handled.
“I wish I could have stayed longer because there is so much to do there that I look forward to learning when I get to college,” she said. “The office staff is really like a family setting where everyone gets along and everything runs smoothly. I hope I get to come back again.”
