One by one, more than 160 Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets filed into the gymnasium at Lee County High School, Leesburg, Ga., for their annual inspection, Nov. 30.
Established in 1981, the NJROTC is under the direction of Navy Capt. Al Schuette, senior naval science instructor and Gunnery Sgt. Bill Cash, naval science instructor.
“This is our annual off-site inspection as required by the commander of Navy Education and Training,” Schuette said. “We rotate between off-site and area manager inspections every other year due to the large number of units located in Georgia and Florida.”
In addition to the inspection of cadets, the program included a demonstration by the drill teams, a presentation of appearance and fitness awards and promotions, and finally, the pass in review.
Maj. Mike Mullins, deputy manager, Center Operations Division, Maintenance Management Center, Marine Corps Logistics Command, served as the guest inspector.
Mullins told the cadets at the end of the program, “Today is your day; it’s game day for you and I commend each of you for a job well done. It has been my honor, privilege and pleasure to be here and the pride you take in your work shows and there is a lot of pride in the high school and it is reflected in the unit.”
One of the cadets who received special recognition is JaWaun Stanley who has been a NJROTC cadet for the past two years and is the son of a retired Marine. He plans to attend the Naval Academy after graduation and join the Marine Corps as an officer.
“In addition to being promoted to petty officer third class today, I also received an appearance and physical fitness award,” he said. “I work hard and make sure my uniform is squared away at all times because I take pride in what I do. My parents are both former Marines and it’s just in me to want to look and do my best.”
