SMP Recreation Center provides educational opportunities, fun

The new Single Marine Recreation Center provides single Marines and sailors a place to relax after working hours.

The center contains a game room, which houses three game stations, a game area for a Wii, plus one for Play Station and Xbox. Chairs in the game stations will be plugged into a screen creating a virtual-reality experience.

The facility also has pool tables, a foosball table, an air hockey table, a computer room with desktop and laptop, Wi-Fi throughout the building and a theater with a 65-inch big screen television and 12 recliner chairs.

Service members can also listen to movies on headsets. Additional television sets will be mounted on the facility’s walls to provide other programming.

“Marines use the computers for a lot of things. They can check their e-mail, check their Facebook and they also use it for education  purposes,” Tom Bell, manager, Thomason Gym, Marine Corps Community Services, said.

According to Sgt. Michael C. Barnes, shipping noncommissioned officer, Critical Assets Rapid Distribution Facility, the center is a welcome relief from life in the barracks.

“We come in here to have a good time,” he said. “It’s a very competitive atmosphere with all of the different games that are available.  The best part is that it brings us together outside of work.

“That’s important because if we’re just working, working, working then we’re going to crash sooner or later,” he said.

The recreation center is open Mondays - Fridays from 4-10 p.m. and weekends from 1-10 p.m. For more information, call (229) 639-7724.
