MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE ALBANY, Ga. -- A project coordinator’s support of Maintenance Center Albany Business Department’s many requirements that will positively impact the maintenance center’s future merited him the 2010 Civilian- Marine of the Year Award.
Providing pertinent MCA information for the National Defense Authorization Act Section 822 Data Call, Terry J. Boyd was recognized a second time last month for his continual efforts during MCA’s 2010 Employee Recognition Day at Covella Pond recently. This past summer he won Civilian-Marine of the Quarter for 2010’s second quarter.
“It’s a very prestigious award and I never expected to win or be selected for it,” said the Cecilia, La., native. “I’m very fortunate to work here and very blessed to be here.”
Boyd added that receiving the award motivated him to work harder and reminded him how important the MCA team’s mission is. He hoped other maintenance center employees who saw him honored would be inspired as well.
Approved by Congress, the NDAA data call mandates an independent analysis of Department of Defense depot maintenance activities, he said.
“The data call establishes a new baseline level of global support,” Boyd said, noting an independent data gatherer will report its findings to Congress in December. “I’m continuing to answer questions about our draft as the independent data gatherer puts its findings together for Congress.”
Boyd and his team collected fiscal years 2003-2009 information such as forward base support MCA provided in the United States and outside of the U.S.; actual planned workload; how much equipment can be repaired at MCA and projections for fiscal years 2010-2015; lists of all MCA buildings or structures, all equipment with unique capabilities that is used to repair Marine Corps and DoD equipment; workforce capabilities; different skill sets employees possess to perform their workloads and training.
The team also collected financial data like how MCA executed its budget, its production expenses and general administration costs.
Boyd also helped Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., with providing its NDAA data call. While he worked on this ongoing project, which was outside of his regular Program Management Branch realm of duties, he also continued many of those tasks as well.
Melinda Martin, interim manager, Business Department, MCA, commended Boyd’s performance.
“The Business Department is very proud to have Terry on our team,” she said. “Terry’s work ethic, attention to detail, and ownership of projects assigned to him are traits that are admired by his peers. Terry has set the bar high for others to strive to achieve the honor in winning this prestigious award.”
Boyd is a veteran of the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Michigan. He began his civil service career in 2004 as an intern in the Navy Financial Intern Management Program.
He is an adjunct professor at Albany State University where he teaches upper level undergraduate students health care finance and introduction to corporate finance.
