Marines

Base pool now open with new features

The base swimming pool is open for the summer, and a number of new features have been added for authorized patrons to enjoy while escaping from the heat of southwest Georgia.

Some of the new improvements include new furniture, a new, modern slide and a splash pad for the youngest visitors.

According to Dan Daniels, athletic director, Thomason Gym, Marine Corps Community Services, it’s all about quality of life for Marines.

“We wanted to give the Marines modern equipment like they would find on larger installations,” Daniels said. “A lot of bases have gone away from the kiddie pools. Smaller children can now get in there (regular swimming pool) and play, where in the past the parents had to be in the pool with the children.”

Daniels also said that a lot of effort went in to the pool during the winter months. The lifeguard stands were replaced and shade risers were installed along the outskirts of the pool to provide cover from the sun.

For pool patron Monica Veldez, she likes the improvements to the children’s play area. “This is so nice. The kids can play freely, and I don’t have to always worry about keeping an eye on my son in the kiddie pool. I think this is safer now the way they have it,” Valdez said about the children’s splash pad.

Daniels said that he expects pool usage to increase with the implementation of all the improvements.

Overall MCCS spent more than $85,000 modernizing the pool and surrounding areas.

The base pool is open for recreational swim Tuesday through Sunday from 1-7 p.m. and open for lap swimming Tuesday-Friday from 11:30 a.m.-1p.m.
