Midnight, April 15, marked the deadline for filing income tax returns and for the volunteer tax preparers at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, it marked the end of another year of assisting eligible personnel.

“Staff Sergeant Curtis L. Wilson was the MCLB Albany Office of Staff Judge Advocate’s senior noncommissioned officer in charge,” said Capt. Peter B. Rottkamp, deputy staff judge advocate/trial counsel, SJA, MCLB Albany. “He was our subject matter expert for tax issues and ran the program for the past three years and did an exceptional job running the tax center and getting the Marines trained to prepare tax returns.”

The tax center assisted with the preparation of 684 returns which garnered approximately $900,000 in refunds.

The value of the tax services provided was placed at approximately $80,000.

“Our records show that the number of clients assisted in the MCLB Albany tax center this year is approximately the same as last year,” Rottkamp said.

Marines who volunteered to work in the tax center attended a week of training in January, and then worked in the base tax center from Jan. 25-April 15.

The free tax service was provided to active duty personnel, retirees and dependants of both.

The Marines who volunteered to work in the tax center, with the permission of their command, were Sgt. Cory B. Miller, Cpl. Alexander J. Acosta and Cpl. Terrence J. Brownlee, all from Marine Corps Logistics Command; Cpl. Benjamin J. Jaeger, Cpl. Phillip S. Alexander Jr., and Lance Cpl. Brittany N. Pinson, all from MCLB Albany.

The tax service is scheduled to be offered again in 2011.
