Birth, Death, Marriage and DivorceAn official certificate of every birth, death or marriage is on file in the locality where the event occurred. These records are filed permanently either in the State Vital Records Office (sometimes called Vital Statistics Office), or in a city, county or local office. The Federal Government does not keep copes of these records.In Georgia, obtain a copies of birth, death or marriage records by mailing a notarized statement identifying yourself and what you want to the following address:Georgia Depart of Human ResourcesVital Records Service, Room 217-H47 Trinity Avenue, SWAtlanta, Ga., 30334Enclose a $10 money order for each certificate and state the full birth name and married name of the person for whom you need the record, the date of birth, death or marriage and the name of the funeral director, if a death record is what you need. Expect a three- to four-week waitFor states other than Georgia, call directory assistance and ask the phone number of the Vital Records or Vital Statistics Office where the birth, death or marriage occurred.The Clerk of the Court where the divorce occurred keeps divorce records. In Albany, the Clerk of Superior Court's phone number is 431-2198.DeedsObtain copies of deeds from the County Records Office where the deed was recorded (the county where the land is located). The Dougherty County Records Office is located in the courthouse and can be reached at 431-3226. DD 214If a service member loses their DD 214 they should visit the online veteran records site, eVetRecs, at www.vetrecs.archives.com, or call them at 1-866-272-6272. Members who separated before 1993 can request their records through eVetRecs. Members who separated after 1993, need to contact their branch of service. The form that must be filled out is an SF-180; the third page contains branch contact information. The form is available on the eVetRecs Web site, or members can visit their nearest military personnel office to get copies of the form. To avoid all this, service members are advised to record a copy of their DD 214 at their local courthouse for future purposes.
