Dozens of firefighters aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany got a chance to build some critical skills thanks to a new live fire structural trainer, October 25. The installation recently purchased the structural trainer; the original cement structure was condemned 10 years ago.

Firefighters will use it to perform search and rescue simulations with dummies. Also, the fire trainer will help them learn how to contain a fire.

“Just like we try to teach people in their homes to close their doors to keep the fire out, if we can close the door of the structure, that’s going to keep the fire in that room … it’s just going to keep our skills up,” Sean Edmondson, assistant fire chief, MCLB Albany, explained.

After ensuring all victims are out of the building, the last phase is containing and attacking the fire.

Now firefighters will be able to train with a car and dumpster fire simulators and a live fire structural trainer.

MCFD will train its personnel once a month on the live fire training, along with other required trainings.
