Master Sergeant Jamil P. Alkattan, a native of South Bend Indiana, enlisted in the Marine Corps on 8 August 2001. He attended recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (M.C.R.D), San Diego, CA 21 August 2001. Upon completion of recruit training, he reported to Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) at the School of Infantry (West), Camp Pendleton, California where he attained the MOS of 0311 Infantry Rifleman.
In January of 2002 Private First Class (PFC) Alkattan reported to 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion 5th Marines in Camp San Mateo, California. While serving with 5th Marines, Lance Corporal (LCpl) Alkattan deployed to Iraq for OIF I (2003) and OIF II (2004). He was part of the initial invasion of Iraq with RCT 5 and on the push to Baghdad. In OIF II, his platoon did mortar mitigation operations out of the Abu Ghraib prison then into Fallujah for the initial invasion on 4 April 2004.
In January of 2005 Corporal (Cpl) Alkattan reported to Range Control, MCB Quantico serving as the Chief Scheduler for all training conducted in Quantico. He attained an Associates Degree in General Studies from the University of Phoenix and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant prior to attending Recruiters school in 2007.
In March 2007, Sergeant Alkattan reported to the 9th Marine Corps District, RS Chicago, RSS Oak Lawn. In 2010 he completed a successful tour in South Chicago as a canvassing recruiter and was then transferred to 29 Palms, CA, 7th Marine Regiment, 3d BN 4th Marines in March of 2010.
From March 2010 to January 2015 Staff Sergeant Alkattan served in 3d BN 4th Marines, India Company. He started in Weapons Platoon as the mortar section leader for their deployment to Amman, Jordan then served as the 1st Platoon Sergeant for a deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. SSgt Alkattan also deployed to the Republic of Georgia as an individual augment, Infantry Tactics Advisor for two months. In 2012 he earned his Master Trainer Certificate from the school of International Sport Science Association (ISSA).
In January of 2015, SSgt Alkattan transferred to Field Medical Training Battalion-East, Camp Johnson, NC where he served as a course instructor.
In August of 2015 SSgt Alkattan received orders to the Ground Combat Element-Integrated Task Force (GCE-ITF) and successfully served as an Infantry platoon Sergeant for the provisional Rifle Platoon in support of the Commandants Force Integration Plan Line of effort-III until the completion of the assessment in July of 2016.
Upon the completion of the Commandants assessment in July 2016, he reported to Marine Combat Instructor School (MCIS), at the SOI-W where he obtained the AMOS of 0913, Combat Instructor. While in Combat Instructor School, he was hand selected to move to the Hawaii Detachment to work independently as the Chief Instructor and as the SNCOIC for Advanced Infantry Training Battalion (AITB), Advanced Infantry Marine Course (AIMC), Detachment Hawaii. He was then promoted to GySgt in August 2016. While at AIMC he helped update the Infantry Squad Leader, Program of Instruction (POI). Along with his duties at AIMC, Det Hawaii he served as a Faculty Advisor (FA) for the Career Course Seminar at the College of Distance Education Training (CDET) from January 2017 to present day.
In August 2018 GySgt Alkattan received orders to the Marine Corps Training Mission (MCTM) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to serve as a foreign military advisor for the Presidential Guard Institute-Basic School. Upon the completion of his tour, he earned the AMOS of 0571, Advanced Foreign Security Force Advisor.
In September 2019, GySgt Alkattan transferred to MCLB Albany (MCLBA), Georgia to serve as the BN Operations Chief, within six months he took the position as the Company 1stSgt. He was promoted to MSgt on 1 April 2020. In May of 2020, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Management and was recognized as a distinguished graduate; he was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success for his perfect GPA. MSgt Alkattan deployed to Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, Joint Task Force-Bravo as a J35, Strategic Planner from June 2021 to January 2022. While at JTF-B, he forward deployed to Haiti for HADR response with the Situational Assessment Team (S-SAT), and then served as the Camp Commandant in Port Au Prince, Haiti. In January of 2022 MSgt Alkattan returned to MCLB-Albany to serve as the Base SgtMaj (Acting) from January 2022 to present. In May 2022 he will receive a Master of Arts degree in Human Service Counseling through Liberty University with a 4.0 GPA.
Master Sergeant Alkattan’s personal awards include: Combat Action Ribbon; Joint Service Commendation medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with (3) stars; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with (4) gold stars.
