Field meet held during Commandant's visit

24 Apr 2003 | Cpl. Denyelle D. Spillane Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany

Albany Marines participated in a field meet April 24 at Covella Pond.

The Marines were split into teams and competed in several events including a fireman's carry relay, fire team pushups, and a rifle and pack relay.

After the sporting events, the Marines spoke with the commandant and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

The Commandant, Gen. Michael W. Hagee, and Sgt. Maj. Alford L. McMichael spent some quality time with the Marines following a three-day general officer conference held here.

After speaking with the Marines it was time for chow and photo opportunities with the guests of honor.

The Marines finished up the day with the obstacle course challenge, the dizzy izzy, and the tug of war event.

Following the tug-of-war, Headquarters Battalion and the S-6/Installation and Logistics team were tied for second place overall with 23 points.

The announcer, Gunnery Sgt. James Cully, Headquarters Battalion gunnery sergeant, announced that third place would be decided by a race between the staff noncommissioned officers, of the two teams.

When the staff NCOs sprinted and gave all they had, it was Headquarters Battalion that came out as the third place winners.

The Marine Corps Systems Command was the team that snatched the trophy for this field meet with a total of 38 points.

As the trophy was awarded, it was apparent that MCSC team members were proud of their victory.

"I had a great time at the field meet," said Sgt. Jasper Tapia, programmer, MCSC. "Many Marines helped out to put the field meet together, and the final product turned out to be an outstanding time for everyone to enjoy."
