Memorial service to be held for base employee

A memorial service in honor of the late Jerome Parker, of Columbus, Ga., will be held at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga., Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 10 a.m.

Parker was a contract employee of the United States Postal Service, and had worked in the base post office since 1998.

His funeral was held Tuesday in Phenix City, Ala., and he was interred the same day at the Main Post Cemetery at Ft. Benning, Ga., with military honors.

The entire base mourns the loss of a fellow employee and our hearts and prayers go out to Parker’s family members and many friends.

Parker was born on July 5, 1954, in Columbus,  Ga., and grew up in Phenix City, Ala.  He graduated from Central High School in 1972.  After graduation, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served until 1975.

Parker then enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1976, and retired from the Marine Corps as a gunnery segreant in 1993.  He then was contracted to work in the base post office aboard MCLB Albany.

At the time of his passing, he had worked aboard the base for at least the last two decades.

Parker is survived by his wife Verda L. McMillon-Parker, his son Joel B. Wright, daughter Kim M. Wright, three grandchildren, five sisters and six brothers.
