The Senior Sailor of the Year of the Albany Branch Medical Clinic was recently named.

Petty Officer 1st Class Straussi L. Mumford was presented with the honor of the 2003 Shore Sailor of the Year award.

According to Chief Petty Officer John Paschall, Mumford distinguished himself among his peers in his daily activities.

"Petty Officer Mumford is an outstanding sailor who continues to be one of our top performers at all levels in the clinic," said Paschall. "His strong desire to improve himself and those around him has made the Navy and the community a better place to be."

Mumford had been previously recognized as the Sailor of the Quarter for the second quarter here.

Throughout his time here, Mumford has served as the command career counselor and the assistant command fitness leader.

According to Paschall, while he was a career counselor, Mumford successfully encouraged several sailors to reenlist, and attend schools to further their careers and enhance their knowledge. He also aided more than 10 junior sailors in reaching their next rank.

While serving as the fitness leader, Mumford was responsible fore leading more than 40 participants in morning physical training.

"His leadership and drive for excellence have improved fitness at this command and have dramatically improved clinic morale," said Paschall.

Mumford is currently serving on overseas deployment.
