Fourteen children rummaged through a box looking for that perfect piece as they built dinsoaurs, flags and other items during the first Lego® Club at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany's Library, June 25.

Co-hosted by the Library and the Exceptional Family Member Program, the event will be held each month on the fourth Thursday from 10-11 a.m. The club is for children, ages to 4-12, and Duplo® Legos®, which are larger, are provided for toddlers. For more details, call 229-639-5242 or 229-639-5277.

There will be a different theme each month and the June 25 theme was dinosaurs, according to Becky Shiver, EFMP manager, Family Care Branch, Marine Corps Community Services.

“We are hosting the Lego® Club to provide an opportunity for families to interact and network while children use their creativity to build with Legos®,” Shiver said. “Playing with Legos® gives children a chance to master concepts in math and motor skills and playing in a group encourages social interaction. We throw in a reading component by providing books on the monthly theme as inspiration.”

Ryan Rachels, Library technician, along with Shiver, watched the youngsters create various items.

“I’m tickled pink they’re having such a good time,” Rachels said.

Kendra Gregg brought her 11-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son to the club to have some fun and participate in activities with other children on base.

“They both enjoy Legos® and (this seems) like a good fit,” Gregg said. “(This will) refine their creative thinking skills, maybe some fine motor skills and social skills for my 6-year-old son.”
