Base to host Independence Day Celebration July 2

25 Jun 2009 | Nathan L. Hanks Jr. Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany

The Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga., will host its 15th annual Independence Day Celebration   July 2 at Boyett Park from 4 – 10 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

While waiting for the main fireworks event, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and many family–oriented activities.

Lining the park will be food and drink vendors selling everything from funnel cakes and corndogs to pizza and homemade ice cream with ice cold beverages to cool them from the afternoon heat.

Highlights of the evening’s event will include patriotic music from the Albany Marine Band, a military working dog demonstration and, dropping in for their third consecutive year, will be the Silver Wings Parachute Team from Ft. Benning, Ga.

Free inflatable jumpers and a rock climbing wall will be available for children to play on throughout the late afternoon.

In addition, the newly-crowned 2009 Miss Georgia will mingle with the crowd and autograph pictures for her fans.

As the sun begins to set, celebrators will be entertained by the Albany Marine Band as they performed a medley of patriotic and military music.

The band’s performance will lead up to the 15 minute traditional fireworks display over Covella Pond.

The fireworks will conclude the Independence Day Celebration.

Last year, more than 10,000 people from around the area gathered here to celebrate with the Marines. That number is expected to increase this year.

There will be public parking at the main gate.

The public is asked not to bring coolers, pets, weapons, knives, or wear inappropriate clothing. Bags will be subject to inspection. The public is welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
